Peaceful Art is a site dedicated to art and the joy of painting it. It is dedicated to the process of painting. It is dedicated to the practice of painting just as we might practice meditation.
Art and meditation are similar. Both seem to be a vehicle for us to transcend mundane, or usual modes and states of being.
I am a practicing Buddhist and have found that the effect of these two activities seem to be related. Can we humbly say that the joy emanates from the same place?
When we meditate we go beyond the, often heavily overloaded thinking processes - we contact a different part of us - different to the cognitive and affective resonates which we involve in so much of modern life.
Painting changes that sense of being burdened - it releases us - it allows us to be. In that being we can be creative because we have connected with the part of us which simply is creative. This is in the same way that somebody engaging in a meditation, let's say, the mindfulness of breathing will use the breath as the object of meditation - the meditator becomes one with the breath. In doing this he/she transcends the usual range of cognitive/affective states and habitual patterns which can seem so prevalent. As the breath facilitates, as a vehicle, our journey to a higher state of being, so does healing occur - so it is with the painting process - our idea, either the landscape in the natural world or our photograph, serves as a meditation object. For this reason it is better that we choose something beautiful to 'meditate upon' as we are imbibing this beauty and allowing it into our subconscious minds. In just the same way this becomes transcendental. We connect with beauty, we transcend usual states of being and a 'healing' occurs.
This is why engaging in the arts is not a luxury for humans, it really is something we must do on a regular basis.
